Nigerian woman gets life jail for drug trafficking in Tanzania


A 38-year-old Nigerian woman, Vivian Edigin, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after she was found guilty of drug trafficking by a Tanzanian court, presided over by Justice Aishiel Sumari.

The Citizen reports that Edigin, was caught with 797.56 grams of cocaine worth Sh39.8 million through the Kilimanjaro International Airport, (KIA).

Also sentenced alongside Edigin was a her Kenyan counterpart, Josephine Mumbi Waithera, who was also found guilty of the smuggling 3,249.82 grammes of heroin with a street value of Sh146.2 million. She was nabbed upon arriving at KIA from Vienna, Austria, on November 27, 2012
The drugs smuggled by the two women had a combined worth of Sh289 million, the court heard.
In her confession, Edigin who is from Edo State, said she decided to push the drugs because life was very difficult for her and her family as she had four children to look after.
Justice Sumari said the prosecution had proven its case beyond any reasonable doubt that the accused had 15 capsules filled with cocaine in her luggage, and had swallowed 48 others, which she later passed out.
