Deadly Love - Woman dies after lover set her on fire in Ibadan

A 28-year-old Togolese woman, Lamin Isah, has died after her lover, Kabiru Bakare, a Tipper driver based in Ibadan, Oyo State, allegedly doused her with petrol and set her on fire during a heated argument.

The ugly incident which happened at the Alakia area of the ancient city, has thrown the residents into shock as they could not comprehend what could have led Bakare, who is now in police detention, to behave in the manner he did.

Apart from Isah, one Ahmed Muyideen, said to be a close friend of Bakare who tried to pull Isah up from where she was pushed down by her lover during the argument, also suffered burns and is currently receiving treatment in the hospital..

It was gathered that Isah, a mother of two, had been in a relationship with Bakare for one year, after he separated from his first wife and mother of his three children.

The lovers reportedly had a misunderstanding on March 13, 2016, at the Tipper Park at Alakia, prompting Bakare to ask Lamin to go to her residence where she rented.

After she left, Kabiru reportedly asked Muyideen to accompany him to a place, only for Muyideen to see that it was Lamin’s residence when they got there.

Narrating further on his hospital bed, Muyideen said that on their way, he noticed his friend had a keg of petrol and he asked him for some to use in his vehicle but that Bakare refused, saying the fuel was for his generating set.

On arrival at Lamin’s house, a fresh argument broke out between the lovers, resulting in Bakare slapping the lady, prompting the woman to hold on to his knickers, while Muyideen made efforts to separate them, castigating his friend for beating a woman.

Bakare allegedly gave the woman a heavy punch  and she fell down beside a stove that a co-tenant was cooking on.

Bakare then doused her with the fuel he brought, igniting both Isah and Muyideen.

The two victims were rushed to a hospital in the city where she died five days later.

Policemen from the Egbeda Division were said to have arrested Kabiru in the hospital premises, while the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan, for further investigation.
