According to reports, the 33-year-old man, Ekwere, was in the habit of collecting his wife's salary and giving her out of it for her needs but when she refused to part with her December, 2015 salary, he assaulted her, beating her black and blue.
The police prosecutor in the case, Sergeant Lucky Ihiehie, said the victim had lodged a complaint that her husband assaulted her because she did not give him her salary for December.
Ihiele said that Esther, whose Expected Delivery Date (EDD), was near, was paid her December salary and preceded on her vacation.
“The accused chased her with her pregnancy around the house premises and beat her up.
According to the complainant, her husband threatened to kill her if she dared come back to their house. He also refused to provide for the needs of his wife, knowing fully well that her health and that of the baby were at risk," the prosecutor told the court.
He added that the accused who resides at 5, Owodunni Street, Oworonshoki, is facing a four-count charge bordering assault, intimidation and failure to supply necessities, offenses that contravenes Sections 170, 171, 56 and 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty and the Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule Amzat, granted him bail in the sum of N 50, 000 with two sureties who must be gainfully employed, while adjourning the case till February 22.
