Female driver kills 8 people in a Lagos street

A female driver has thrown the Ilaje-Bariga, a suburb in Lagos State, into mourning after she allegedly lost control of her LandCruiser Sport Utility Vehicle to crush eight people to death along the Ilaje Road in the area on Saturday, January 30.

Among the dead were a pregnant woman, two siblings, an old woman and a man returning from his place of work, while many others were said to have sustained varying degrees of injuries, including fractures and broken limbs in the incident which happened around 9pm.


It was gathered that the woman whose identity the police refused to divulge, had dismissed her driver for the day at a petrol filling station in the area and was driving to her house located on Adebisi Street, also in the area but had barely taken the wheels to drive the SUV home, when the vehicle reportedly surged forward, crushing the pedestrians, killing two of them on the spot, while the rest died at the Gbagada General Hospital, where the injured had been rushed to.

Two more corpses were found in the gutter the following morning.

After the accident, it was gathered, angry youths in the area dragged the woman out of the vehicle, stripped her naked and beat her to a pulp and could have been lynched if not for police from the Bariga Division who rescued her and rushed her to a private hospital.

Neighbours said the woman was supposed to celebrate her birthday on Sunday, January 31, and was busy making preparations for the big day before the sad incident occured.
