Nanny from Cameroon remanded in prison

An Ikeja Chief Magistrates' Court sitting in Lagos State has remanded a Cameroonian woman, Christine Amosson, in prison custody for allegedly attempting to steal a baby in her care, reports Punch.

Amosson was ordered to be behind bars till the next date of adjournment by presiding judge, Magistrate Bola Osunsanmi, on a two-count charge of attempt to commit felony and child stealing.

The prosecuting police officer, Inspector Simon Imhonwa, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on January 4, 2016, at 12.30pm at her employer’s residence in Gbagada area of the state, after she was employed to take care of the six-months-old baby while the parents go to work.

“On January 4, after her employers had left for work, the accused strapped the baby on her back; she packed all her belongings into a ‘Ghana-Must-Go bag’, and attempted to flee with the child.

She was apprehended by a neighbour who alerted the child’s parents and later handed her over to the police," the prosecutor said, adding that the offence contravened Sections 21 and 275 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.

Magistrate Osunsanmi who spoke to the accused through an interpreter, remanded her in prison till February 10 when the case would be heard.
