Man in prison for strangling his 2-month-old baby in Kano


A 32-year-old businessman in Kano State, Kamal Rabiu, has been arraigned before a Magistrates' Court sitting in Nomans Land in the northern city, on a charge of culpable homicide, and remanded in prison, for allegedly strangling to death a two-month old baby born to him by a girlfriend.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Rabiu was remanded by Chief Magistrate Muhammad Idris, pending an advice from the State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), following an application by the police prosecutor, Inspector Badamasi Ya’u.


Inspector Ya’u had told the court that on December 21, 2015, the Commander of Hisba, Kano command, reported the case to the Commissioner of Police. He said the accused of Goron Dutse Quarters, sometimes January, 2015, impregnated his girlfriend, Malama Kaltume Tijjani of Unguwa Uku Kano.

The lady gave birth to a baby boy named Muhammad Kamal in October but on the fateful date, the accused went to Nasarawa Hospital to collect the two month-old infant from his mother. But in the struggle that ensued, Rabiu strangled the baby.

When th one-count charge was read to him, Rabiu pleaded not guilty, prompting the magistrate to order that he be remanded in prison custody till the next adjourned date of February 8, 2016.
