In Lagos - Man, 32, in court for allegedly defiling daughter

A 32-year-old man, Kenneth Okonkwo, was on Tuesday docked at an Ikeja Magistrate Court for defiling his 10-year–old daughter.

The accused, a trader who lives at 9, Jamolaya St., Abule Egba, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a charge of defilement.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Benedict Eigbokhon, told the court that the offence was committed between April 4 and December 2015 at the accused residence.

Eigbokhon told the court that the victim, a 10-year-old girl, was living with her father since her mother had married another man.

"The girl was supposed to have gone to spend her holidays with her mother but when the mother did not see her, she went to lodge a complaint at the Welfare Office in Alausa, Ikeja.

"The accused and the victim were summoned for questioning and interview, and it was in the process that the girl confessed to the welfare officer that her father had been sleeping with her,’’ he said.

Eigbokhon said that the accused was handed over to the police for prosecution.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused pleaded not guilty.

The chief magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, granted the accused bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.

Elias ordered the accused to pay N200, 000 into the registrar's account as part of the bail condition.

The magistrate adjourned the case to February 17, 2016 for mention.
